In a range actively handled by a Range Officer, you will hear the Range Terms: “Hot,” “Cold,” “Cease-fire,” and “The Range is Active.”

  • “Hot”: You are allowed to shoot downrange in a safe manner.
  • “Cold”: No shooting and NO HANDLING of firearms. This is a common mistake for first-time range attendees.
  • “Cease-fire”: Stop shooting, unload your firearm, put it down on the bench with the action open and the muzzle pointed downrange, and step back behind the cease fire line.
  • “The Range is Active”: Translates to the range is “Hot,” so it means you can load and safely shoot downrange.
